Well, the week is almost over….I started this past Monday morning by treating myself to a large coffee at Peet’s across from the Claremont Hotel petes.jpg…BIG MISTAKE! By mid-morning, my heart was ready to jump out…I was having major palpitations and by the afternoon, I had the case of the nerves. I should have known not to order a large cup but I figured I needed all the caffeine I could get to stimulate my brain cells that morning.

This evening, I got a call from the two R’s……RS called to say she was going to pass by my house to show me the mosaic stepping stone she made at this place up in Montclair called Snapshot Mosaics. Here’s the mosaic she made….dsc00061.JPG dsc00061.JPG

This other pix shows her stepping on it…. dsc00062.JPG Can you guess what it is? No it’s not a crab…it’s a “SUN.” I kidded with her and said it looked like a scorpion…(well, a very fat one that is!) RS did a beautiful job on her first mosaic piece! [known to her as “Mozack” 🙂 ] We’re going to schedule a class so that I can also make my own “mozack”. The other RM called from Petaluma…she’s my “country” gurlfriend whom I’ve known since junior high…a good 28+ years. Since she recently moved to her own house in Petaluma, she called for some “design” ideas as she was in the process of doing her son’s room. Being a country gal that she is, it sounds like her son’s room is going to have some “rustic” charm to it… I told her that I would visit her sometime in July or August (of this year). Since she’s been living in Petaluma since 1998, (I just called her to get that info…My Bad!) I’ve only visited her once…yes..uno…one time only. My bad again! However, despite that, we do manage to connect here and there…(right? 🙂 ) Oh…since I seldom visit her…she said she had the Premium Outlets built in Petaluma so that I could have a reason to visit her more often…Not! I know…My bad!! She knows I love her though!

Well, it’s around 9:44 p.m….I’m going to blog off now and “clear” the kitchen of dishes, etc. (I quickly went up stairs and saw that the hubs had washed the last of the dishes and the kitchen was “clean” again…what a hubs, huh? ) before heading for bed…I did a load of laundry too…housework never ends! Now you know why I need the caffeine! 🙂

After mass today, the familia and I went to Bay Street. Since JP got his first official paycheck, he “treated” us to Fudrucker’s….after lunch, AC needed a few summer clothes so we went to Old Navy…it turns out that I have to go back because they had charged me for an item that I didn’t purchase…it was for a mere $7.50…heck I could get almost 2 gallons of gas for that…I hate it when that happens, but now I will pay more attention to my receipt before I leave any establishments…Arraaghhhh! I won’t make a special trip just to get the 7.50 credit but will do so when there is a need for me to go again…which seems like everyweek.. 🙂 Here’s a few things that I bought for AC… Bermuda shortsbermuda.jpg and beaded cami . brown-cami.jpgSince the hubs and JP didn’t feel like walking around the other stores, we met up with them at Barnes…of course I had my Blackberry Green Tea frap…the calories were shared with the hubs…while at B&N, I bought a novel by Judith Michael entitled, “The Real Mother.” Also, JP needed 2 books to be read before school resumes in August. We headed home around 4:00 p.m….in time for me to continue my laundry….and other “domestic” duties….It’s now 6:09 p.m…I better stop blogging so I can at least finish some of my chores that I’ve already started…I told AC that we’ll watch this evening the remake of “When A Stranger Calls“….a DVD that I “netflixed” ….I remember watching the original version back in the late 70’s and later again this time with Bril and AC about 2 years ago. The original ones are usually better than the remake…we shall see…..

Today, Saturday, 6/24 the altar servers from our parish and the chaperones were invited to a day at Paramont’s Great America…there were 30 of us, 10 of whom were chaperones, including Father NG and RF. JP couldn’t make it because he had to work. Surprisingly enough, the weather was at a comfort level…although the sun beaded down on my front & back, there was that gentle breeze. I only went on 2 rides [which tells you that I’m not into rides :-)]…one was that “tram” that went across and the other was this one called the “Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera.” You sit in these movable seats in their FX theater and it feels like you’re part of the action….something similar to “Soaring Over California” in Disney’s California Adventure (but the “Soaring” one felt “real” because of the true-to-life film unlike the cartoons in this one.) shows_funtastic_characters.jpg In our group we had JM & her gurls and SM & her boys….we also had Katia and Jared. We met up with Father NG and some others for lunch…we found out that Father NG enjoys those thriller rides! I couldn’t leave PGA without having their funnel cakes so I shared the funnel cake with JM and Andie…it was soooo good with all that glazed strawberries and tons of whipped cream! The groups went home at different times….since we only had Katia with us, we decided to “close the park”…gosh..the park closes so early for the summer…I think 8:00 p.m. is just a tad bit too early..how about 10 at least? Well…after the park, before going home, we ate at In & Out Burgers at Union Landing in Union City. Well, it’s around 10:00 p.m. now so off to bed I go…one last thing, JP was already home when we got home…my “poor baby boy” had to take the bus home that evening, but we were in constant contact with him via the cell phone…I was worried because that’s the first time he had to take the bus home late that evening.

Another hot day….

Well…the temperature in the Bay Area was hotter than yesterday…not much relief at work except for the opened window and the lights turned off. I’ve been home for a couple of hours now just being “lazy.” There’s a nice cool breeze coming through the screened patio door right now…I decided to blog while waiting for our pizza delivery we ordered at Roma’s. It’s 7:40 p.m. so it’ll be another 25 minutes or so before the pizza is delivered. I was going to bake a chicken lasagna that I bought at Trader Joe’s (where else?) 🙂 but the hubs said I’ll make the kitchen even hotter so that’s why we opted for the pizza. I’m also marinating some chicken adobo for the hubs to bring to my in-laws tomorrow. The hubs is off because he had worked last Saturday. He would have taken AC tomorrow but she’s working (volunteering) as a CIT (Counselor in Training) at one of the day camps at the park. JP on the other hand has been working at Pier 39 since the beginning of the month. He was so thrilled to get his first paycheck this past Monday that I actually made a colored copy of it to “frame.” Well, I better get my salad fixin’ ready…looks like we’ll be eating in the backyard again…ciao…

Chicken Adobo is one of the most popular of the Filipino dishes.  It is tasty and easy to prepare.  This is one dish the familia seem to like.  Hint:  I added a little bit of brown sugar.

4 – 5 lbs. chicken thighs

½ cup white vinegar (for less “vinegary” taste, I used about ¼ cup)

½ cup soy sauce

4 cloves garlic, crushed

1 tsp. black peppercorns or freshly ground black pepper

3 bay leaves

Combine all ingredients in a large pot.  Cover and marinate chicken for 1 – 3 hours.  Bring to a boil, then lower heat.  Cover and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.  Uncover and simmer until sauce is reduced and thickened, and chicken is tender, about 20 more minutes.  Serve with steamed rice.  (serves 6 – 8)

Hint:  Nanay always added potatoes (cubed) right before the adobo is cooked so I’ve done the same since..

What to do with the left-over rice?  The staple of the Filipino food is “rice”, therefore “fried-rice” with garlic is often served for breakfast along with fried eggs and Filipino sausage (longanisa).  Here’s one recipe using the left-over sauce from the Chicken Adobo.

3 tablespoons olive oil (I used EVOO)

½ to 1 head garlic, peeled and diced

4 cups cooked rice (refrigerated overnight)

Left-over Adobo sauce (any left-over meat, chopped finely)

Place rice in a container and separate grains using your hands.  In a nonstick pan, heat oil over medium heat and gently brown garlic, about 30 seconds.  Add rice and mix thoroughly until rice is evenly coated.  Add adobo sauce and meat, and cook until heated thoroughly.

Summer Solstice

Yeah! Summer has finally arrived! This afternoon Bril and I went to the Staff Summer Fest and spent 2 hours of admin. leave just “hanging” out. There were games, free food, drinks, t-shirts and other “freebies” for all. The best part was their entertainment – – Pete Escovedo Latin Orchestra! Bril and I found a nice shaded area right on the side of where they were performing. The temp must have been closed to the 90’s….we had a hard time trying to eat our it’s-its because it was melting away! While the band took a break, thee “wife”  happened to stand next to us. I recognized her through various articles and we chatted about the event, etc. Bril and I found her to be a very warm, personable and down-to-earth person. Unfortunately after the event, we had to go back to work…uggghhh!!! I still had 2 more hours to go…..then home…

Since it was the first day of summer and the temp in the house was unbearable, the familia dined al fresco. It was a good thing the hubs “cleaned” the backyard the day before. The table/chairs that were covered for many months were wiped down, the ground was swept and free of fallen leaves. For dinner I had prepared ground angus beef with barbecue sauce on french bread topped with provolone cheese…we had it with green salad (raspberry vinaigrette) and baked wedge french-fries. I was going to make some mai-tais for the hubs and I but I didn’t have any pineapple juice so we had peach ice tea instead. Everything we consumed that evening was from Trader Joes sans the peach ice tea. 🙂 Welcome Summer!!

A Day with AC…

Since the hubs and JP had to work last Saturday, it was a perfect day to spend time with AC…so off we went to Bay Street. We got there just before noon….we weren’t quite hungry yet so we went in and out of the various stores….the first store being Pottery Barn. They had some colored glazed pots on sale and vases, but I held back because I really didn’t need them…more of a want rather than a “need.”  We went inside Bath & Bodyworks and to our surprise, ran into AC’s liturgical dance instructor, RV. RV is up here for the summer and is working at Bath & Body. She showed AC their new line of American Girl….I bought her a tube of body lotion with glitter…for 10 bucks! After an hour or so of strolling, we had lunch at Rubio’s as that was AC’s choice. Afterwards, we “moseyed” over to Barnes & Nobel to look for some summer reads for AC…as if lunch wasn’t enough, I had to have the Blackberry Green Tea frap greentea1.jpg and AC had her fav…double-double chocolate chip. After almost 4 hours of Bay Street (with only a white cotton sleeveless blouse I bought from the Gap and AC’s books), we called in quits…went to Trader Joe’s in Emeryville since we were already in the vicinity. On our way home, we visited E who was in the hospital and chatted with him and JM. We couldn’t stay too long because I had bought some perishable items at TJ’s prior…on our way home, we made a stop at the 3dpbox7.gifVillage Market to buy some of those boxed cookies from Too Good Gourmet. JM wanted to give them as thank you gifts for E’s nurses during his stay. When we got home, I unpacked the items from TJ, vegged out on the couch and eventually took a nap…it was a great “mamabear & bear” time spent!
